Shell Nigeria Strengthens Deepwater Operations with Major Maintenance Contract

Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company has secured comprehensive maintenance support for its flagship Bonga deepwater field through a significant contract awarded to Singapore-based Nortrans in partnership with Temile Development Company. The agreement will see the deployment of the Temis 500-capacity DP3 maintenance and safety unit to provide offshore accommodation and support services.

The 2015-built flotel will mobilize directly from its current assignment with Equinor on the FPSO Bacalhau project in Brazil to begin operations in West African waters. The contract builds on the established partnership between Nortrans and Temile, recognized as a trusted leader in Nigeria’s maritime and energy sector.

The Bonga field, located at water depths exceeding 1,000 meters, began production in 2005 with capacity of 225,000 barrels of oil per day and achieved the milestone of producing its one-billionth barrel of crude oil in 2023. Shell announced a final investment decision last year for Bonga North, a subsea tie-back project to the FPSO Bonga currently operating at the field.

This contract award follows Shell Nigeria’s recent acquisition of TotalEnergies’ 12.5% stake in the OML 118 production sharing contract containing the Bonga field, consolidating Shell’s position as operator of one of Nigeria’s most important deepwater assets.
