Senegal’s Oil Production Soars to 36.1 Million Barrels, Exceeding Forecasts

Senegal’s oil output for 2025 reached 36.1 million barrels, significantly exceeding initial projections, according to the Ministry of Energy, Oil and Mines. The achievement marks a major success for the West African nation’s nascent oil industry, with production surpassing expectations by nearly 20%.

Initial projections for the year stood at 30.53 million barrels and were already raised to 34.7 million in June. In a report published on Wednesday, authorities attributed this excess to “the good response of the reservoirs, the good maintenance of wells, and the robustness of operational performance.”

Senegal’s oil output comes from the Sangomar offshore oil and gas field, located 100 kilometers off the coast of Dakar. Australian group Woodside Energy began operating the site in 2024, and the field has consistently outperformed expectations since coming online.

The Ministry revealed that three shipments of crude oil from Sangomar were sold on the international market in December alone, accounting for 2.94 million barrels. Senegal also exceeded its expectations regarding liquefied natural gas, with LNG production reaching its highest level in December 2025 at 0.5 million cubic meters exported that month.

The strong performance positions Senegal as an emerging oil producer in West Africa and demonstrates the potential of the Sangomar field to contribute significantly to the nation’s economy.
