Saipem Completes Ambitious Rig-to-Platform Transformation for Eni’s Congo Gas Project
Italy’s engineering giant Saipem has successfully completed the complex conversion of the semi-submersible drilling unit Scarabeo 5 into a state-of-the-art floating production unit for Eni’s groundbreaking Congo LNG project.
The transformed vessel will serve as the nerve center for Congo’s first natural gas liquefaction project, handling hydrocarbon separation, boosting operations, and acting as the control hub for the entire offshore development at the Marine XII concession.
Saipem’s comprehensive scope covered engineering, procurement, construction, transportation, and commissioning of the FPU, designed for installation at approximately 35 meters depth off the Republic of Congo’s coast. The conversion was completed in an impressive timeframe of less than 24 months.
Built in Italy during the early 1990s, the Scarabeo 5 was selected for conversion due to its reputation as one of the finest units of its generation. The fourth-generation semi-submersible drilling rig previously boasted a maximum drilling depth capability of 9,000 meters.
Chinese contractor CIMC Raffles handled the primary conversion activities, including dismantling the original drilling system, refurbishing marine systems, and installing brand new topside process modules. The project represents a prime example of circular economy principles and industrial asset reuse. The Congo LNG project utilizes two FLNG units at the Nenè and Litchendjili fields. FLNG Tango has been operational since late 2023, while FLNG Nguya is scheduled to join operations later this year.
