Rhino Resources Strikes Oil Gold Again with Third Namibian Well

Rhino Resources has commenced drilling its third exploration well, Volans-1X, in Namibia’s offshore Orange Basin, building on spectacular success from previous wells that discovered hydrocarbon-bearing reservoirs and light oil production exceeding 11,000 barrels per day.

The Volans-1X well was spudded Thursday at 10am local time using Northern Ocean’s semi-submersible Deepsea Mira in water depths of approximately 1,200 meters. The well is expected to take around 55 days to drill and represents a strategic test of a new play with potentially sheet-like reservoir morphology.

Rhino’s previous wells have delivered remarkable results. The Sagittarius-1X well, spudded December 18, 2024, intersected a hydrocarbon-bearing reservoir with no water contact, confirming active petroleum systems. The second well, Capricornus-1X, tested light oil production exceeding 11,000 barrels per day with approximately 38 meters of net pay, minimal gas, and no water contact.

CEO Travis Smithard emphasized the company’s commitment to local content: “We’re proud to deliver another well in Namibia, sourcing all associated construction services and equipment locally.” The drilling marks another crucial step in unlocking the hydrocarbon potential of Namibia’s Orange Basin, which has rapidly emerged as Africa’s hottest offshore oil exploration frontier.
