Republic of Congo Accelerates LNG Expansion with Italian Energy Giant Eni

The Republic of Congo is rapidly expanding its liquefied natural gas capabilities through a strengthened partnership with Italian energy company Eni. President Denis Sassou Nguesso met with Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi in Brazzaville to review progress on the Congo LNG project, which has already transformed the country’s energy export profile.

Since commissioning its first phase, Congo now exports 1 billion cubic meters of LNG annually using floating liquefaction infrastructure. The ambitious expansion plan will see phase 2 launching in the fourth quarter of 2025, dramatically increasing export capacity to 4.5 billion cubic meters per year.

Eni remains the sole foreign operator of Congolese gas resources, directly supplying the Congo Electric Power Station that produces 70% of the country’s electricity. Beyond energy, the Italian company has distributed over 60,000 improved cookstoves since 2024, benefiting 300,000 people in Pointe-Noire and Brazzaville.

The partnership extends to infrastructure modernization, with Eni rehabilitating the 220 kV electricity distribution line connecting Pointe Noire to Brazzaville and upgrading nine associated substations to ensure stable power supply between the political and economic centers.
