Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery to Become World’s Largest with $350M Expansion Deal
In a landmark development set to reshape Africa’s energy landscape, state-owned Engineers India Ltd (EIL) has secured a massive contract worth over $350 million to manage the expansion of Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Complex. The ambitious project will catapult the facility from its current capacity of 650,000 barrels per day to an unprecedented 1.4 million barrels per day, positioning it as the world’s largest petroleum refinery at a single location.
The expansion, designated as Train 2, will produce Euro VI-grade fuels and dramatically scale up polypropylene capacity from 830 kilo tonnes per annum to 2.4 million metric tonnes per annum. This will be achieved through revamping the existing polypropylene unit and installing an additional 1.2 million metric tonnes per annum unit, alongside a world-scale 750 kilo tonnes per annum UOP Oleflex unit to augment propylene feed.
EIL, which served as the engineering, procurement and construction management consultant when the Dangote Group first built the oil refinery, has been re-hired for this transformative expansion. The original single-train facility, located in the Lekki Free Zone and commissioned in 2024, is already recognized as the world’s largest of its kind, producing Euro-V quality gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and polypropylene.
The expansion is expected to strengthen fuel production capacity within Africa, reduce dependence on imports, and support regional energy security. It further reinforces Nigeria’s mission to become a regional hub for refined petroleum products and petrochemicals. EIL, a premier engineering consultancy under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India, will deploy its multidisciplinary expertise and global execution model to support the next phase of this historic complex.
