Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery Announces Massive Fuel Storage Expansion into Southern Africa

Nigeria’s Dangote Petroleum Refinery is set to construct large-scale fuel storage tanks in Namibia’s Walvis Bay capable of holding at least 1.6 million barrels of gasoline and diesel, marking a strategic expansion that could reshape regional energy trade flows across southern Africa.

The move represents a bold step in Dangote’s ambition to dominate fuel supply across the continent, with the planned storage facility expected to supply fuel to Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, with possible expansion into the southern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The $20 billion refinery, which began operations in 2024, is Africa’s largest with a capacity to process 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Bloomberg ranks it as having higher capacity than Europe’s ten largest refineries combined. The facility currently produces aviation fuel, diesel, gasoline, and naphtha, and has already helped transform Nigeria into a net exporter of petroleum products.

A Namibian Ports Authority official confirmed the plan, noting that construction is expected to begin soon within the Walvis Bay harbour, though project costs were not disclosed.
