Nigeria Launches Massive 40,000 CBM LPG Vessel to Transform Clean Energy Access Across Africa

President Bola Tinubu declared Nigeria ready to deliver clean and sustainable energy solutions across Africa and beyond during the commissioning of a groundbreaking 40,000 cubic meter Liquefied Petroleum Gas vessel in Ulsan, South Korea. The vessel, christened MT Iyaloja (Lagos), represents a major leap forward in Africa’s clean energy infrastructure.

The dual-fuel, fully refrigerated LPG carrier is owned by WAGL Energy Limited, a joint venture between Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and Sahara Group. This latest addition brings WAGL’s total LPG vessel capacity to an impressive 162,000 CBM, joining other vessels including MT Africa Gas, MT Sahara Gas, MT BaruMK, and MT Sapet.

The symbolic ribbon cutting was performed by Alhaja Folasade Mujidat Tinubu-Ojo, granddaughter of the late Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, after whom the vessel was named. WAGL’s Managing Director Mohammed Sani Bello announced ambitious expansion plans, including the addition of a Small Gas Carrier and a Very Large Gas Carrier within the next two years.

NNPC Ltd.’s Group CEO Bashir Bayo Ojulari highlighted that WAGL has delivered over 6 million metric tons of LPG across West Africa over the past five years, demonstrating the company’s crucial role in bridging Africa’s energy infrastructure gap.
