Mauritania Implements Strict Gas Flaring Ban as Production Ramps Up

Mauritania has enacted comprehensive regulations prohibiting gas flaring and venting, marking a significant environmental milestone as the country establishes itself as a gas-producing nation. The new decree, adopted following a Council of Ministers meeting in June, allows exceptions only for emergency situations or operations specifically defined in environmental impact assessments.

The timing of the regulations coincides with Mauritania’s emergence as a gas producer following the December 2024 startup of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) field. The massive offshore development, operated by bp in partnership with Kosmos Energy and national oil companies from both Mauritania and Senegal, represents one of Africa’s largest deepwater gas projects.

The GTA field targets approximately 15 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas and is expected to play a crucial role in regional energy security. The project’s success, combined with Mauritania’s proactive environmental regulations, positions the country as a responsible energy producer committed to sustainable development practices.
