Massive Green Ammonia Project Set to Transform Egypt’s Port Said into Global Fuel Hub
A groundbreaking green energy project is poised to revolutionize Egypt’s position in the global maritime fuel market, with Project Ra set to produce up to 2 million tonnes of green ammonia annually at East Port Said. The ambitious development has secured backing from UK maritime authority Lloyd’s Register, marking a crucial step toward commercialization.
The facility’s strategic location adjacent to the Suez Canal positions it as a critical refueling hub for ammonia-powered vessels navigating one of the world’s busiest shipping routes. With production scheduled to begin in 2029, Project Ra will generate 1.65 million tonnes of green ammonia exclusively from renewable energy sources.
This development comes at a pivotal moment as the International Maritime Organization’s new greenhouse gas reduction measures will mandate the use of low- and zero-carbon fuels from 2030 onwards. The regulations will introduce carbon pricing mechanisms that significantly increase the cost of fossil fuel use across the shipping sector.
German developer DAI Infrastruktur is spearheading the project, building on a 2022 memorandum of understanding with the Suez Canal Economic Zone and a 2023 partnership with technology giant Siemens Energy. The project is expected to supply European ports, particularly in Germany and Greece, with green ammonia for multiple applications including ship fuel, electricity generation, and industrial decarbonization.
