Masdar Secures First Angola Power Agreement with 150 MW Solar Project
Global energy developer Masdar has signed its first Power Purchase Agreement in Angola, securing long-term offtake for the 150 megawatt Quipungo Solar project situated in Huila Province in southern Angola. The company signed the agreement with Angola’s Rede Nacional de Transporte de Electricidade in January, reflecting a commitment to deploying large-scale clean energy solutions in the country.
The Quipungo Solar Project is the first commercial development under Project Royal Sable, a three-site renewable energy program targeting 500 megawatts. The program aims to strengthen Angola’s national grid network by enhancing generation capacity. Once completed, the program will create more than 2,000 jobs, provide electricity to 300,000 households and support Angola’s sustainable development objectives.
Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Chief Executive Officer of Masdar, stated that the Quipungo agreement demonstrates how long-term partnerships and structured offtake arrangements can accelerate the deployment of utility scale renewables that support national clean energy ambitions, economic development and job creation, providing reliable, affordable clean power to local communities. Francesco LaCamera, Director-General of IRENA, added that the project will contribute to strengthening Angola’s power system and expanding access to clean, reliable electricity, improving thousands of lives and inspiring greater investor confidence in Africa’s energy transition.
