Libya Surges to Second Place in African Oil Export Rankings Despite Production Dip

Libya has secured its position as Africa’s second-largest oil exporter with production reaching 1.280 million barrels per day in June 2025, despite experiencing a decrease of 24,000 barrels from the previous month. The North African nation trails only Nigeria, which leads with approximately 1.547 million barrels daily after recording an increase of 19,000 barrels over the previous month.

The rankings reflect the volatile nature of African oil production, with Libya maintaining its strategic position in the continental energy landscape even as production numbers fluctuate. Algeria holds third place with daily production of 927,000 barrels, cementing the top three African oil exporters.

The production figures come as global oil prices rose during June 2025, positively impacting production levels across African countries that rely heavily on crude oil as a major source of national income. Libya’s resilient performance underscores the country’s continued importance in global energy markets despite ongoing challenges.
