Libya Moves to Unlock Gas Potential in Messla and Sarir Oil Fields

Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC), through its General Gas Department, has begun collaborative discussions with the Arabian Gulf Oil Company (AGOCO) to develop and utilize the vast volumes of associated gas being flared from the Messla and Sarir oil fields. These fields, located in eastern Libya, are among the country’s most prolific oil-producing assets.

The focus of the initiative is to expand the national gas transmission infrastructure to capture and transport the gas currently lost during crude extraction. Associated gas, a by-product of oil production, has historically been flared in Libya due to limited infrastructure. By capturing this gas, Libya aims to not only reduce its carbon footprint but also improve domestic energy supply and create new revenue streams.

This development is seen as a significant step toward transitioning Libya’s energy sector from a focus purely on crude oil to a more balanced, gas-inclusive strategy. It also reflects NOC’s efforts to modernize infrastructure and attract foreign investment through environmentally responsible practices.
