Liberia Set to Unveil West Africa’s Massive $96 Million Solar Revolution
Country’s first major solar power plant to be dedicated in October, marking historic shift from hydropower dependence
Liberia is preparing to dedicate its first large-scale solar power facility next month, a groundbreaking 20-megawatt solar farm in Grand Bassa County that represents a $96 million investment in the nation’s energy future.
The solar installation is part of the World Bank-funded Regional Emergency Solar Power Intervention Project (RESPITE), designed to expand reliable and affordable electricity access across West Africa. The comprehensive financing package also covers expansion of the Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant and additional technical assistance for Liberia’s energy sector.
Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah revealed during a press briefing that major construction work, including steel erection and solar panel installation, is progressing according to schedule. The project, launched by President Joseph Boakai in October 2024, is being executed by ICC Offshore.
This development marks a crucial step toward diversifying Liberia’s energy sources and reducing dangerous dependence on hydropower, which leaves the country vulnerable to seasonal water shortages. Like many African nations, Liberia continues struggling with electricity shortages due to inadequate infrastructure.
The government is simultaneously working on multiple energy projects, including repairs to Turbine One at Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant, expected to restore 22 megawatts of capacity by May 2026.
