Jordan Secures Critical Gas Supply as Energos Force FSRU Arrives in Aqaba
Jordan has successfully received the Energos Force floating storage and regasification unit at Aqaba port, marking a crucial step toward securing the kingdom’s natural gas supply. The FSRU commenced operations this week, facilitating the gasification of liquefied natural gas shipments ahead of its connection to the Arab Gas Pipeline.
The development stems from a 2024 cooperation agreement between Egypt and Jordan that leverages Egypt’s floating storage and regasification infrastructure to supply Jordan with natural gas while meeting local market demands. Jordan will utilize the LNG to operate its power plants, while the unit’s connection to the Arab Gas Pipeline enables Egypt to access LNG supplies during peak demand periods or emergencies.
Sufian Batayneh, General Director of National Electric Power Company, highlighted the strategic importance of the LNG facility for Jordan’s power generation capabilities. The Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources emphasized that this cooperation reflects regional integration and mutual benefit from shared infrastructure.
Egypt currently operates three regasification units at SUMED and Sonker ports in Ain Sokhna with an overall capacity of 2,250 million cubic feet per day. Damietta port is also expected to receive the Energos Winter FSRU, which features 450 mmcm/d regasification capacity under a five-year lease agreement.
