Ghana’s Energy Security Gets Major Boost as Eni Expands Gas Capacity to 270 MMSCFD

Ghana’s energy security received a massive boost as Eni Ghana and its partners successfully expanded their offshore gas processing facilities to 270 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD), significantly enhancing the nation’s power generation capabilities.

The expansion, completed on July 13, represents a critical milestone for Ghana’s energy independence and transition to cleaner power sources. The Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) project now supplies approximately 70% of Ghana’s national gas demand, directly powering about one-third of the country’s electricity grid.

Since launching in 2018, the OCTP project has evolved from an initial capacity of 210 MMSCFD to its current enhanced level through continuous improvements. This upgrade dramatically improves gas delivery consistency while reducing Ghana’s dependence on oil-powered electricity generation.

The project operates as a joint venture between Eni Ghana (44.4% stake), Vitol Upstream Ghana Ltd (35.6%), and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) with 20%. The partners have maintained steady production levels of approximately 34,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day since Eni’s entry into Ghana in 2009.

The expansion provides households, businesses, and industries across Ghana with a cleaner, more reliable energy source while supporting the country’s sustainable development goals. Beyond energy production, the partners actively support community initiatives including vocational training, clean water access, and local economic development.
