FLNG Gimi Hits Commercial Operations Milestone for GTA Project
The FLNG Gimi by Golar LNG Limited has officially achieved commercial operations date (COD) for its 20-year lease and operate agreement with bp for the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) project offshore Mauritania and Senegal, marking a watershed moment for West African LNG production.
This milestone represents successful LNG production ramp-up to levels equivalent to approximately 2.4 million tonnes per annum, reaching around 90% of the facility’s 2.7 million tonne nameplate capacity. The achievement follows first LNG production in February and the maiden cargo export in April.
The rapid progression has been remarkable – with the second and third LNG cargoes exported in May and early June respectively, while a fourth cargo is currently loading. Industry watchers expect the fifth cargo at the start of the third quarter, with Kosmos Energy forecasting 3.5 gross cargoes for the second quarter alone.
The COD achievement and accelerating cargo lifting activity highlight exceptional cooperation between project partners and Golar, setting a strong precedent for future floating LNG developments in the region.
This success story positions the GTA project as a flagship example of how innovative floating LNG technology can unlock previously stranded gas resources in challenging offshore environments.
