Egypt’s Petroleum Minister Advances Al Hamra Port Development Project
Karim Badawi, Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, conducted a comprehensive field visit to El Hamra Petroleum Port in New Alamein City to assess ongoing development and expansion initiatives. The ambitious project aims to transform El Hamra Port into a major Mediterranean logistics hub for crude oil and petroleum products storage and handling, following the successful model of the UAE’s Fujairah Port.
During his visit, Minister Badawi met with key stakeholders including Salah Abdel Karim, CEO of Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation, Ahmed Adel, Advisor to the Government of the Emirate of Fujairah, and various officials from both sides. The Minister emphasized the critical importance of accelerating implementation procedures for the comprehensive petroleum logistics project.
The development agreement facilitates knowledge transfer from Fujairah Port’s management to establish a sophisticated petroleum logistics zone leveraging Egypt’s strategic Mediterranean location and existing petroleum sector infrastructure. Ibrahim Massoud, Chairman of Western Desert Operating Petroleum Co. and port operator, briefed the Minister on current construction progress in both northern and southern port areas.
The northern area expansion includes four new crude oil storage tanks that will increase total capacity from 2.8 to 5.3 million barrels. The southern area will feature a fully integrated petroleum products facility with 130,000 tons capacity, implemented in two phases. The first phase, completing by year-end, includes two diesel storage tanks, while the second phase, finishing in the second quarter of next year, will add six tanks for gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.
The project’s long-term vision targets expanding the port’s capacity to 20 million barrels of crude oil and 400,000 tons of petroleum products by 2030.
