Egypt’s MIDOR Refinery Boosts Capacity to 160,000 Barrels Per Day

Middle East Oil Refinery (MIDOR) has successfully raised its operating capacity to 160,000 barrels per day, driven by new expansion plans aimed at boosting local production and reducing reliance on imports. The milestone was announced during a visit by Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, as part of his tour of petroleum refining projects in Alexandria.

MIDOR Chairman and CEO Amr Lotfy highlighted the production rates and operating conditions following recent expansions, confirming the refinery’s capability to provide products that comply with European Euro 5 emission standards. The refinery currently supplies the local market with between 17-20% of its diesel and gasoline needs.

The company plans to raise its production capacity through refinery expansion works by 160% in 2025, building on the completion of a project that increased refining capacity by 60%. In 2024, MIDOR increased production by refining more than 46 million barrels, a 26% increase from 2023 levels, leading to significant increases in both diesel and high-octane gasoline production.
