Egypt Opens Major Chinese Renewable Energy Manufacturing Hub in Suez Canal Zone
Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has inaugurated a Chinese technology industrial complex dedicated to manufacturing components for renewable energy projects within the Suez Canal Economic Zone, marking a strategic milestone in Egypt’s efforts to become a regional hub for green economy industries.
Located inside the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area in Sokhna, the 116 million dollar complex includes two major production facilities and aligns with Egypt’s Vision 2030 objectives. The inauguration took place at the start of the Prime Minister’s tour of the SCZONE and represents a significant step toward localizing renewable energy industries in the country.
The first facility, EliTe Solar Suez Technology, focuses on solar cell manufacturing with an investment of 40 million dollars and an annual production capacity of 2 gigawatts. The second facility, Elite Solar Green Energy, specializes in solar panels and related electronic components, representing a 76 million dollar investment with a production capacity of 3 gigawatts. Together, the two plants are expected to create approximately 860 direct jobs and 170 indirect positions.
During his tour of the facilities, Madbouly was informed that the local component in the output has reached 50 percent, a percentage he praised while noting that renewable energy is a vital industry that Egypt is striving to localize alongside other key sectors. The achievement demonstrates the project’s contribution to technology transfer and domestic manufacturing capacity building.
EliTe Solar Boda New Energy will operate the complex. The Chinese company, founded in 2005 and currently headquartered in Singapore, is a global leader in the photovoltaic sector with existing manufacturing hubs in Vietnam and Indonesia. In 2024, the company signed a project to establish an 8-gigawatt solar manufacturing hub in Egypt, significantly expanding its international footprint.
The SCZONE has emerged as a primary destination for green economy investments, with total investments reaching 18 billion dollars including infrastructure. The zone’s strategic location and supportive regulatory environment have attracted numerous renewable energy and sustainable technology projects, positioning Egypt as a manufacturing base for the region’s growing clean energy sector.
The new complex represents a key element in Egypt’s broader strategy to attract advanced technological investments and support national green economy initiatives. By establishing local manufacturing capacity for solar cells and panels, Egypt aims to reduce import dependence, create skilled employment opportunities, and participate more actively in global renewable energy supply chains.
The project also strengthens economic ties between Egypt and China, demonstrating successful bilateral cooperation in advanced manufacturing and sustainable technology sectors. As global demand for renewable energy components continues to grow, the complex positions Egypt to serve both domestic and regional markets with locally manufactured products meeting international quality standards.
