Egypt and Cyprus Fast-Track Gas Export Connection by 2027 in Major Regional Energy Hub Move

Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi has announced accelerated plans to connect Cypriot natural gas fields Cronos and Aphrodite to Egypt’s energy infrastructure by 2027, following high-level discussions with Cypriot Minister of Energy and Industry George Papanastasiou.

The ambitious connection timeline, discussed during the GASTECH 2025 conference in Milan, Italy, will open unprecedented prospects for Cyprus to export gas to Europe through Egypt while significantly reinforcing Egypt’s strategic position as the regional hub for energy trade and distribution.

During the meeting, both ministers reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to providing comprehensive support to ensure the success of joint strategic projects benefiting both nations. This represents the second high-level meeting between Egypt and Cyprus this month, following last week’s visit by Egypt’s Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Petroleum and Mineral Resources to Cyprus for discussions on strengthening regional cooperation in energy and natural gas.

The Cronos gas field, discovered in 2022 in Cyprus’s Block 6, contains an estimated 70-85 billion cubic meters of gas in place, with some estimates suggesting potentially higher reserves. The field is operated by energy giants Eni and TotalEnergies. The Aphrodite field, discovered in 2011, holds approximately 125 billion cubic meters of natural gas and is operated by Chevron, Shell, and NewMed Energy.

This accelerated timeline represents a significant strategic shift that could reshape regional energy dynamics and establish new export corridors from the Eastern Mediterranean to European markets.
