Egypt Allocates Strategic Land for Green Hydrogen Projects in Red Sea Region

The Egyptian Cabinet has approved the allocation of substantial land parcels in the Red Sea Governorate to the General Authority for Red Sea Ports to support the development of green hydrogen projects and related infrastructure, marking a significant step in the country’s clean energy transition.

During the Cabinet’s 76th meeting chaired by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, officials allocated 251.73 acres for establishing a green hydrogen production plant, 50.17 acres for developing the marine pier for the green hydrogen project, and an additional 173.92 acres for implementing the route of the electricity transmission cable line.

This decision aligns with Egypt’s efforts to diversify energy sources and transition toward a low-carbon economy as part of its National Low-Carbon Hydrogen Strategy launched in August 2024. The strategy envisions Egypt producing as much as 5.8 million metric tons of green hydrogen annually, a feat projected to attract up to $60 billion in investments.

Through this ambitious initiative, the government aims to capture a 5 to 8 percent share of the global hydrogen market by 2040, positioning Egypt as a major player in the emerging green hydrogen economy. The Red Sea location offers strategic advantages for both production and export of green hydrogen to international markets, particularly Europe and Asia.
