Dangote Positions Nigeria as Global Polypropylene Exporter

Dangote Group Limited is transforming Nigeria from a major polypropylene importer into a potential net exporter, marking a dramatic shift in the country’s petrochemical industry. Currently, Nigeria imports approximately 250,000 metric tonnes of polypropylene annually, representing nearly 90% of its domestic consumption.

The Dangote facility, operational since March 2025, is now Africa’s largest polypropylene plant with an annual production capacity of 830,000 metric tonnes. The facility not only bridges Nigeria’s supply gap but positions the country as a significant player in the global market, which is projected to grow by over 25 million metric tonnes before 2030.

Polypropylene products from Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals recently took center stage at PROPAK West Africa 2025, where they were recognized as a game changer by the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) and key industry stakeholders.

Dr. Segun Alabi, Assistant Director of Corporate Affairs and Communications at MAN, confirmed the association’s readiness to collaborate with Dangote to accelerate domestic adoption. “Polypropylene is a vital raw material for many of our members, and the introduction of locally produced supply will ease pressure on importers,” he stated.

The plant supplies the local market in 25kg bags and is positioned to enter the global market through a strategic partnership with Vinmar Group, a leading international distributor of petrochemicals. Local plastic manufacturers, distributors, and industrial users now have access to reliable, high-quality alternatives to imported polypropylene.

The development is expected to significantly reduce imports, strengthen the naira, and bolster local manufacturing capabilities while generating foreign exchange through exports.
