Chevron Strikes Major Hydrocarbon Discovery in Nigerian Waters

Chevron Nigeria Limited has made a significant new hydrocarbon discovery off the coast of Nigeria, marking a major milestone for the country’s offshore energy sector. The discovery was made at the Awodi-07 appraisal and exploration well located in the shallow offshore western Niger Delta, operated under the NNPC/Chevron joint venture.

The drilling operations, which began in late November 2025 and concluded in mid-December 2025, were executed safely and efficiently in strict compliance with approved operational and regulatory standards. Following comprehensive testing, logging, and data acquisition, the well was secured, with results confirming a significant presence of hydrocarbons across multiple reservoir zones.

Udy Ntia, Executive Vice President of Upstream at NNPC, emphasized that the discovery underscores the importance of disciplined exploration programmes, strong partnerships, and the positive impact of reforms introduced under the Petroleum Industry Act. The state-owned oil company expressed its commitment to working closely with Chevron to mature this opportunity and progress it towards timely development and monetisation.

The Awodi-07 well highlights the effectiveness of disciplined exploration, sound technical evaluation, and strong operational collaboration between the joint venture partners. NNPC holds a 60% stake in the partnership while Chevron controls 40%, combining resources, expertise, and investment to develop Nigeria’s oil and gas resources more effectively.

Through this collaboration, both companies aim to increase oil production to about 146,000 barrels per day, which would support government revenue, create jobs, and contribute to the country’s energy supply. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC, stated that the success of the Awodi-07 well further reinforces the strength of the joint venture and their shared commitment to responsibly growing Nigeria’s hydrocarbon reserves.
