Chevron Expands Angola Operations with LNG and Deepwater Oil Development

Chevron continues strengthening its position in Angola’s growing oil and gas sector through expanded natural gas development and deepwater oil exploration opportunities. The energy giant’s efforts support Angola’s economic diversification goals while reinforcing its position as a key LNG exporter in the region.

The company’s Sanha Lean Gas Connection project, operated by subsidiary Cabinda Gulf Oil Company (CABGOC), began gas production in December 2024. This initiative delivers natural gas from Block 0 to Soyo power plants and the Angola LNG plant, the country’s sole LNG facility, with initial capacity of 80 million standard cubic feet per day.

The project’s second phase will add 220 mmscf/d capacity, targeting total feedstock increases of 300 mmscf/d to Angola LNG, effectively doubling facility capacity to 600 mmscf/d. Chevron also participates in Angola’s first non-associated gas project through the New Gas Consortium, comprising Azule Energy, CABGOC, Sonangol E&P, and TotalEnergies.

Set for production by late 2025 or early 2026, this project involves developing the Quilluma and Maboqueiro shallow water gas fields. The completion of Q&M platforms represents a major milestone in expanding Angola’s gas infrastructure and LNG export capabilities.

In deepwater oil exploration, Chevron recently acquired Risk Service Contracts for ultra-deepwater Blocks 49 and 50 in Angola’s Lower Congo Basin. Awarded in January 2024, these contracts enable seismic studies and advanced exploration activities while strengthening Chevron’s presence in Angola’s offshore landscape through existing operations in Blocks 0 and 14.
