Bolt emerges most downloaded travel app amid fierce competition; family-friendly features and safety improvements boost lead

Ride-hailing giant Bolt has overtaken rivals Uber and inDrive to become the most downloaded mobility app in Nigeria, according to new data from Sensor Tower.

The company, which launched in Lagos as Taxify in 2016, now operates in 33 cities across the country, cementing its lead in one of Africa’s most competitive transport markets.

Bolt Nigeria General Manager, Osi Oguah, said Nigeria is one of 23 countries where the company ranks first in downloads in the travel and mobility category. “We’re pleased that Nigerians are enjoying Bolt, but we’ve still got room to grow further and faster,” he said.

The app’s popularity has been driven by new features such as a Family Profile, which allows users to manage and pay for rides for up to nine people from a single account, and Trusted Contacts, a safety tool that enables riders to share trip details with designated contacts.

Globally, Bolt serves 200 million customers in 50 countries, offering ride-hailing, e-scooters, e-bikes, and car rentals in more than 600 cities.

Despite Bolt’s dominance, industry analysts note that inDrive is expanding rapidly, recently ranking as the world’s second most downloaded ride-hailing app, while Uber continues to compete in major Nigerian cities.
