Angola’s Oil Production Plummets to One Million Barrels Daily as Sector Contracts 10.2%
Angola’s oil and gas production suffered a dramatic 10.2 percent decline in the second quarter of 2025, with daily oil output dropping to approximately one million barrels per day, according to a new report from Banco Fomento Angola’s Economic Studies Department. The sharp decline reinforces the ongoing structural downturn plaguing the country’s crude oil production since its controversial exit from OPEC in December 2023.
The decline extended beyond crude oil, with natural gas production falling 8 percent in Q2 compared to the same quarter in 2024, despite showing 3.3 percent growth in the first quarter. Analysts cited data from the National Oil and Gas Agency showing oil output continues following a downward trajectory.
Angola’s departure from OPEC was prompted by disagreements over production quotas, with former Minister Diamantino Azevedo stating the country no longer saw strategic benefits under the constraint of a 1.17 million barrel-per-day quota. Since leaving the organization, Angola has consistently struggled to surpass an average output of 1.1 million barrels per day.
The latest figures highlight the urgent need for structural reform and investment in Angola’s energy sector to reverse the troubling downward trend that threatens the country’s position as one of sub-Saharan Africa’s former top oil producers.
