Angola and United States Strengthen Energy Partnership in High-Level Washington Meeting

Angola has taken significant steps to deepen its strategic energy partnership with the United States following productive discussions between senior officials from both nations. The meeting between Angolan Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas Diamantino Azevedo and U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright in Washington D.C. on June 11 highlighted both countries’ commitment to expanding cooperation across multiple energy sectors.

The discussions, which also included Angola’s Ambassador to the U.S. Agostinho Van-Dúnem, focused on opportunities to build upon the already strong foundation of U.S. involvement in Angola’s oil and gas industry. American companies have historically played leading roles in the country’s offshore exploration, production, and infrastructure development, creating a natural platform for expanded collaboration.

Minister Azevedo emphasized the mutual benefits of the partnership, stating that the meeting “reflects the robust and evolving partnership between Angola and the United States. We are committed to working together to achieve a balanced energy transition that leverages Angola’s natural resources, advances technological cooperation and contributes meaningfully to our economic transformation and development goals.”

Angola’s energy sector presents substantial opportunities for international investment, with the country holding more than nine billion barrels of proven oil reserves and 11 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. The National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency has unveiled over $60 billion in investment prospects spanning exploration, development, gas processing, refining, and midstream infrastructure.

U.S. companies continue to demonstrate strong commitment to Angola’s energy future. ExxonMobil recently secured an extension for Block 17 and is advancing the redevelopment of Block 15 with an 18-well program. Meanwhile, Chevron has ramped up gas supply to 600 million cubic feet per day for the Angola LNG plant and achieved first gas from its Sanha Lean Gas Connection Project.
