Acumen’s Hardest-to-Reach Initiative Secures $250 Million for African Energy Access

Acumen has announced that its Hardest-to-Reach Initiative (H2R) has reached its $250 million blended capital target to accelerate clean and affordable energy access across sub-Saharan Africa, with the final close of its debt vehicle, H2R Amplify, at $180 million.

The milestone includes a new commitment of nearly $7.8 million from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, which helped complete the final close of the Amplify fund. A further $18 million in grant capital will support impact-linked incentives for borrowers.

H2R aims to unlock clean, distributed energy for almost 70 million people in underserved and hard-to-reach regions across 17 countries, including Malawi, Zambia, and Somalia, where conventional capital has struggled to operate. The initiative was anchored by the Green Climate Fund and represents a significant commitment to addressing energy poverty in Africa’s most challenging markets.

The blended finance platform combines the patient capital, market-building facility H2R Catalyze with the scale-focused debt fund Amplify, enabling investments designed for the complexities of frontier energy markets.

Acumen said reaching the fundraising goal and fully capitalizing the initiative positions it to deepen engagements with energy enterprises, strengthen local energy ecosystems, and expand access for households and small businesses across Africa’s most challenging markets.
