Benin Signs for 100 MW of Solar Plus Batteries as AMEA Power Makes Its Debut in the Country
Benin is about to get a new source of clean power. Renewable energy developer AMEA Power and the Government of Benin have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a 100-megawatt (MW) solar and battery storage project, marking the company’s entry into the country’s energy market.
The project aims to increase domestic renewable electricity generation, strengthen energy security and improve power affordability. Battery storage lets a solar plant keep supplying power after the sun goes down, which is when demand often peaks.
It fits Benin’s national electrification agenda, which aims to connect 928,000 households to electricity by 2030 and lift the national electricity access rate from 42.6% to 70%.
The agreement also widens the footprint of AMEA Power, a UAE-based developer, in West Africa, where growing electricity demand and electrification targets are creating openings for private investment in renewable generation and energy storage. A memorandum of understanding is a first step, and the announcement did not give financing details or a construction timeline.
