AI’s Big Appetite Meets Politics: Markets Wobble Over Fears of Data-Centre Curbs

Global markets slipped as investors weighed whether the new political balance in the United States could bring tighter oversight and local restrictions on the construction of data centres, the vast facilities that power artificial intelligence.

Technology shares in Japan, Taiwan and South Korea came under pressure as traders assessed possible limits on the electricity and water that data centres consume. The reaction in Asia is telling: companies across the region make the chips and components that go into the machines filling those buildings, so any threat to the pace of construction is quickly felt in their share prices.

The jitters go to the heart of the AI boom. Artificial intelligence remains a major driver of technology investment, yet it depends on huge facilities, advanced chips, reliable power supplies and cooling systems. Data centres draw heavily on electricity and, in many designs, on water for cooling, which is why local authorities and residents have increasingly questioned where new sites should go and what they cost their communities.

Investors are now looking more closely at how regulation and local-government restrictions could affect expansion, and at the financial returns that justify the enormous spending. If building slows, the effect could ripple through chipmakers, equipment suppliers and the AI companies that rent or own the computing capacity.

The debate highlights the central challenge facing AI companies: scaling up computing capacity while answering growing concerns over energy, water, the environment and the bottom line.
