Two Suspected Ebola Cases in Northeast Nigeria Test Negative, Leaving the Country With Just One Confirmed Case

Samples from two suspected Ebola cases in Nigeria’s northeast have tested negative after two rounds of laboratory testing, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention announced on Sunday in a post on X, Reuters reported. The two people were isolated while officials identified and listed their contacts and carried out the tests. The report did not name the state or town.

Nigeria therefore still has one confirmed case, its first in more than a decade. The patient is a woman who had travelled to Uganda and returned to the capital, Abuja. She and her husband were evacuated to Switzerland last Monday.

The wider outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain is centred in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where more than 5,000 people have died since it was declared in May. Kenya and Uganda have also reported cases. There are no approved treatments or vaccines for Bundibugyo virus.
