Researchers at the German Cancer Research Center, the HI-STEM Stem Cell Institute and Heidelberg University Hospital have taken a close look at how T cells behave inside the bone marrow of patients with multiple myeloma and acute myeloid leukemia — and found something that could reshape treatment thinking.
Published in Cancer Cell, the study found that these T cells aren’t attacking cancer cells the way they should. Instead, they appear worn down — a state researchers call exhaustion, likely caused by prolonged exposure to cancer cells that gradually wears down their ability to respond.
The researchers believe reactivating these exhausted T cells therapeutically could restore their function and give the immune system a real shot at fighting the cancer directly. It’s early-stage insight rather than a finished treatment, but it points toward a specific target for future therapies in these two blood cancers.
