The study shows that when an infant locks eyes with the person speaking to them, their brainwaves begin to fall into sync with the speaker’s, a phenomenon researchers describe as neural synchrony.
That alignment appears to help infants zero in on the most useful parts of speech, such as rhythm, tone and structure, making it easier for them to pick out patterns that underpin language. In effect, eye contact seems to act as a signal that tunes a baby’s brain to pay closer attention to what is being said, rather than treating speech as background noise.
The findings reframe infants as active participants in their own language development rather than passive listeners, and researchers believe the work could shape new approaches to early-years teaching. It may also offer fresh insight into conditions such as autism, where reduced eye contact and social engagement are common early markers, potentially opening new avenues for earlier support.
