Sasol has commissioned a 2 kW proton exchange membrane electrolyser system at its Research and Technology campus in Sasolburg, developed with the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation’s Hydrogen South Africa programme, the South African National Energy Development Institute and North-West University.
Addressing delegates at the July 31 launch, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Blade Nzimande said the project underscores the strategic relationship between South Africa’s critical minerals and its clean energy ambitions, particularly the role of platinum group metals in beneficiation. He said the system would generate the knowledge needed to support commercialisation and wider deployment of green hydrogen technologies in South Africa.
Sasol Business Building, Strategy and Technology executive vice president Sarushen Pillay said the commissioning shows what can be achieved through collaboration between government, academia and industry, describing hydrogen as an important building block for producing sustainable fuels and chemicals. The system will test hydrogen production technologies and evaluate locally developed electrolyser technology under variable renewable energy conditions, while supporting local skills development.
