TGS Launches Mauritania MegaSurvey, Africa’s Largest Regional 3D Seismic Dataset

TGS has announced the launch of the Mauritania MegaSurvey, a large-scale multi-client 3D seismic project designed to support exploration across offshore Mauritania and the wider West African Atlantic Margin, representing the largest regional 3D dataset on the African continent.

The ambitious survey comprises over 100,000 contiguous square kilometers of modern seismic data, strategically positioned to extend and integrate with TGS’s existing offshore Mauritania multi-client library. The project will generate one seamless volume across the offshore waters of Mauritania, allowing regional interpretation of the full petroleum system from nearshore to ultradeep waters.

The MegaSurvey provides operators with regional-scale seismic continuity across multiple exploration plays, supporting robust basin screening, prospect maturation and informed portfolio decision-making. By delivering a harmonized 3D seismic dataset over a large contiguous area, the survey enables more confident geological interpretation, improved understanding of structural and stratigraphic frameworks, and reduced exploration uncertainty. Access to this comprehensive data allows companies to allocate exploration capital more efficiently by de-risking acreage evaluation prior to committing to drilling or licensing decisions.

The survey reflects TGS’s continued commitment to supporting Mauritania’s offshore energy development. Through close collaboration with the Mauritanian Ministry, TGS is contributing to the promotion of the country’s offshore potential by establishing a modern, accessible subsurface data foundation. This regional dataset supports transparent licensing processes and provides international operators with the technical confidence needed to assess investment opportunities offshore Mauritania.

David Hajovsky, Executive Vice President of Multi-Client at TGS, emphasized the strategic value of the project. “The Mauritania MegaSurvey delivers strategic regional value for our customers. By integrating with broader West African subsurface frameworks, the survey provides deeper insight into basin architecture and petroleum systems along the Atlantic Margin. This regional perspective enables operators to assess Mauritania in the context of neighboring proven and emerging basins, supporting play fairway analysis and a more robust understanding of cross-border geological trends.”

The Mauritania MegaSurvey further strengthens TGS’s multi-client leadership offshore West Africa and complements the company’s extensive portfolio of 2D seismic, 3D seismic and well data across the region, positioning the firm as a key data provider for exploration activities along the Atlantic Margin.
