New appointments follow the dismissal of Nadir Larbaoui, part of Algeria’s push to stabilise its government amid economic pressure and energy transition demands.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has named Sifi Ghrieb, formerly Industry Minister and acting prime minister, as the official Prime Minister of Algeria, and appointed Mourad Adjal, ex-CEO of Sonelgaz, as Minister of Energy and Renewable Energy.

Ghrieb had been serving in an acting capacity since late August, when Tebboune dismissed his predecessor, Nadir Larbaoui, who had held the post since November 2023.

In the reshuffle, key portfolios such as finance, trade, and foreign affairs remain unchanged, signalling a targeted rather than wholesale government overhaul.

Analysts note Algeria, a major gas supplier to Europe faces mounting economic challenges and pressure to diversify its energy sector, making the energy ministry’s leadership particularly crucial at this moment.

The full cabinet under Ghrieb includes 34 ministers and three state secretaries. This structure separates the traditional energy portfolio into two: Mourad Adjal oversees Energy and Renewable Energy, while Hydrocarbons and Mines is led by Mohamed Arkab.
