Kenya Positioned to Become Major E-Fuels Producer for Maritime Industry
Kenya’s abundant renewable energy resources position the country to establish competitive e-fuels production for both domestic and international maritime markets, according to a new Global Maritime Forum report. The study, titled “Powering clean shipping: Kenya in the global power-to-x economy,” identifies the country’s wind, solar, and geothermal resources as foundations for competitive e-ammonia and e-methanol production.
Kenya Maritime Authority Director General Justus Omae Nyarandi emphasized the country’s commitment to harnessing renewable resources for shipping’s green transition. The strategy includes developing green shipping corridors and advancing pilot projects at Kenyan ports before 2030.
Key strategic priorities include fostering public-private partnerships, creating supportive policies for green hydrogen projects, addressing cost gaps between e-fuels and conventional fuels, and expanding international partnerships for investment decisions and workforce development.
