TotalEnergies Makes Historic Return to Nigerian Waters with Two Major Offshore Permits

TotalEnergies has secured two significant offshore exploration licenses in Nigeria, marking the first time an international company has been awarded exploration licenses in the country through a bid round in over a decade. The French energy giant was granted permits PPL 2000 and PPL 2001 following Nigeria’s 2024 Exploration Round organized by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission.

Operating in partnership with South Atlantic Petroleum, TotalEnergies holds an 80% operating stake in the licenses while South Atlantic Petroleum retains 20%. The exploration blocks span approximately 2,000 square kilometers in the resource-rich West Delta basin, with the work program including the drilling of one firm exploration well.

“TotalEnergies is honored to be the first international company to be awarded exploration licenses in a bid round in Nigeria in more than a decade, marking a new milestone in our long-term partnership with the country,” said Kevin McLachlan, Senior Vice-President Exploration at TotalEnergies.

The new blocks align with TotalEnergies’ strategy of strengthening its exploration portfolio with drill-ready and high-impact prospects that have potential for low-cost and low-emissions developments, signaling renewed international confidence in Nigeria’s energy sector.
