Angola Launches Historic Kaminho Offshore Oil Project in Deepwater Frontier
Angola has officially launched construction of the Kaminho Project, marking the country’s first offshore oil development in the previously unexplored Kwanza Basin, in a ceremony that signals a new chapter for the nation’s deepwater exploration sector. The groundbreaking “first steel cutting” event at the Petromar shipyard in Ambriz, Bengo province, kicked off fabrication of over 5,500 tons of metal structures for the FPSO and subsea systems, representing more than 1.2 million work hours with 94% of the workforce comprising qualified Angolan professionals.
Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil, and Gas Diamantino Azevedo described the project as “a turning point for the Angolan oil industry,” emphasizing that it brings new life to the Kwanza Basin and will encourage further exploration investments. The project focuses on developing the Cameia and Golfinho fields, located 100 kilometers offshore at 1,700 meters depth, with an expected production capacity of 70,000 barrels per day.
The $6 billion investment involves a consortium led by TotalEnergies (40%), alongside Petronas (40%) and state-owned Sonangol (20%). The next-generation FPSO will feature energy-efficient technology with integrated post-combustion carbon capture and storage capabilities, potentially preventing approximately eight million tons of CO₂ emissions over its operational lifetime.
