Nigeria, UAE, and Qatar Plan Joint LNG Shipping Network
Nigeria is collaborating with the United Arab Emirates and Qatar to establish a unified shipping network aimed at expanding Africa-Asia Liquefied Natural Gas connectivity. The initiative emerged from bilateral meetings between Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, and his counterparts from the UAE and Qatar.
The discussions with UAE Minister of Energy Suhail Al Mazrouei and Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi focused on strengthening energy ties for gas development and growth. The proposed network acknowledges the long-standing partnerships between these countries through OPEC and the Gas Exporting Countries Forum.
Key areas of cooperation include joint LNG trading and cargo swaps, midstream development encompassing pipelines and LPG/CNG infrastructure, and processing hubs. The partners also emphasized decarbonization partnerships focusing on carbon capture, utilization, and storage, blue hydrogen production, and methane management initiatives.
The discussions build upon Nigeria’s Decade of Gas initiative, representing a national commitment to harness the country’s abundant natural gas resources as a catalyst for industrialization, economic diversification, and clean energy access between 2021 and 2030. The collaboration follows previous agreements established during President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Qatar in March 2024.
