Egypt Boosts Zohr Gas Production with New Well Contributing 65 Million Cubic Feet Daily
Egypt’s petroleum sector has achieved a significant production milestone with the successful commissioning of the Zohr-6 well, adding 65 million cubic feet of gas per day to the nation’s energy supply. Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi announced the achievement during general assembly meetings of Belayim Petroleum Company and Petroshorouk, attended by representatives from international partners including Italy’s Eni, Britain’s BP, Russia’s Rosneft, Hungary’s Arkeus Energy, and the UAE’s Mubadala.
The minister emphasized Zohr field’s critical role in Egypt’s energy security, noting its significant contribution to domestic natural gas requirements. He commended investment partners and field employees for their dedication to boosting production while maintaining rigorous safety and environmental standards. Work is currently underway on three additional wells in the current financial year, with the Saipem 10000 drillship conducting operations that began in February. The drilling program includes wells Zohr 13, Zohr 6, and Zohr 9.
The Zohr field, located within the offshore Shorouk Block, represents the largest gas discovery ever made in Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea. Ownership is distributed among Eni with a 50 percent stake, Rosneft holding 30 percent, BP with 10 percent, and Mubadala Petroleum maintaining 10 percent.
Throughout the year, Petroshrouk invested $569 million in new operations and is preparing additional work on the Zohr-9 well along with drilling two new development wells. Petrobel allocated over $460 million to production and exploration activities, recording crude oil production of approximately 56,000 barrels per day from the Nile Delta and Sinai regions.
