Norwegian holding company Lime Petroleum has commenced drilling operations at the Sèmè oil field offshore Benin, marking a significant milestone in the country’s offshore energy development. The wholly-owned subsidiary Akrake Petroleum Benin began operations on August 4, 2025, using Borr Drilling’s advanced Gerd jack-up rig.

This startup represents the first of three development wells planned as part of an ambitious 100-day work program covering 551 square kilometers in waters ranging from 20 to 30 meters deep. The project signals renewed international confidence in Benin’s offshore energy potential and represents a major investment in West Africa’s emerging oil and gas sector.

The drilling campaign in Block 1 is expected to provide crucial data on the field’s commercial viability and could pave the way for expanded development activities in Benin’s offshore waters.
