Oando Makes History with Africa’s First Solar Panel Recycling Plant
Nigerian energy giant Oando PLC is set to establish Africa’s first solar PV module assembly plant with integrated recycling capabilities, according to its Q1 2025 financial report. The groundbreaking 1.2-gigawatt facility represents a major milestone in Africa’s renewable energy development.
The company has already secured land for the facility and completed financial modeling following a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Oando Clean Energy and Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency (REA). The plant’s first 600MW production capacity is expected to launch in 2026, with the unique distinction of being Africa’s first solar module plant featuring an integrated recycling line for repurposing old panels.
REA CEO Abba Aliyu described the partnership as transformative, noting it will enhance energy access and position Nigeria as a renewable energy leader. The development comes as Oando reported impressive progress in electric mobility, recording over 53,000 EV rides and preventing nearly 43,000 kg of carbon emissions using its operational electric buses.
