Massive $25 Billion Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Races Toward Construction

The continental energy game is about to change forever as the $25 billion Nigeria-Morocco Atlantic Gas Pipeline project hits critical construction milestones following decisive meetings in Rabat. The 6,000-kilometer mega-infrastructure project is now positioned for immediate implementation after West African leaders approved the Intergovernmental Agreement during the December 2024 CEDEAO Summit.

Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition Leïla Benali has announced the launch of the pipeline’s first phase connecting Nador to Dakhla before July’s end, representing a $6 billion investment that will serve as the project’s North-South backbone. This Moroccan segment marks the historic transition from planning to operational reality for what promises to be Africa’s most transformative energy project.

The massive pipeline will originate in Nigeria and snake along the Atlantic coast through Benin, Togo, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Gambia, Senegal, and Mauritania before reaching Morocco. Once operational, it will transport up to 30 billion cubic meters of gas annually, serving both African markets and European consumers through connections to existing pipeline networks.

The infrastructure promises to provide electricity access to over 500 million Africans while catalyzing industrial development, including aluminum processing in Guinea. The project could also transport green hydrogen from Morocco to European markets, positioning Africa as a major player in the global energy transition.

Financial structuring shows encouraging progress with the United Arab Emirates among interested investors, while project profitability exceeding 12 percent has attracted specialized funds and international financial institutions.
