Nigeria’s FIRST E&P Enters Tanzania’s Gas Sector Through Mnazi Bay Partnership

Nigeria’s FIRST Exploration & Petroleum Development Company (FIRST E&P) is expanding its reach across Africa with a new agreement to explore and potentially develop the Mnazi Bay North Block in southern Tanzania. The gas-rich block lies within a promising hydrocarbon zone near Tanzania’s existing pipeline infrastructure and gas markets.

The agreement, signed with the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), gives FIRST E&P the responsibility to conduct a fully-funded technical assessment, which will determine the block’s economic and geological potential. The deal reflects Tanzania’s growing reputation as a frontier gas player and FIRST E&P’s strategic shift toward regional diversification.

Tanzania has a strong incentive to fast-track domestic gas development, with most rural households still dependent on charcoal and firewood. Unlocking gas reserves will support industrialization, electrification, and cleaner cooking solutions.

This is also a milestone for intra-African energy partnerships, showcasing how indigenous firms can lead regional energy transformation without solely relying on foreign multinationals.
