Nigeria’s Dangote Threatens Direct Sales to Combat High Cooking Gas Prices

Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, has announced plans to slash Liquefied Petroleum Gas prices across Nigeria, warning distributors that his company will bypass them entirely if they continue inflating costs. The billionaire industrialist made the declaration during a tour of the Dangote Refinery in Lekki, Lagos.

The Dangote Refinery produces approximately 22,000 tonnes of LPG daily, yet many Nigerians still rely on firewood and kerosene due to unaffordable gas prices. Current cooking gas costs range from ₦1,000 to ₦1,300 per kilogram, pricing out many households from cleaner energy alternatives.

“We want Nigerians to feel the benefit of this supply,” Dangote emphasized, addressing members of a business delegation. His direct-to-consumer strategy aims to lower costs, promote cleaner energy alternatives, and accelerate the transition away from traditional fuels.

The initiative supports broader energy reforms and environmental sustainability while potentially easing the economic burden on Nigerian families. If implemented, the strategy could significantly impact the country’s domestic energy market and improve access to modern cooking solutions.
