Mozambique Gives Green Light for TotalEnergies’ Massive $20 Billion LNG Project Revival

In a major development for Africa’s energy sector, Mozambique has officially cleared the path for TotalEnergies to restart its suspended $20 billion liquefied natural gas project. Energy Minister Estevao Pale confirmed that all government-level preparations are underway following high-level talks between TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanne and President Daniel Chapo.

The French energy giant had suspended operations in 2021 after a deadly insurgent attack near its Afungi site in northern Mozambique. With security conditions now significantly improved, the company is reportedly planning to resume project development as early as this summer.

“All the conditions are being created to allow investors to restart activities as quickly as possible,” Pale emphasized during an event in Inhambane province. The restart of Africa’s largest energy project is expected to play a pivotal role in global LNG supply and regional economic development.
