Golar LNG’s $2.7 Million-Ton Facility Officially Launches Operations Off West Africa

Golar LNG has officially reached commercial operations at its massive Greater Tortue Ahmeyim gas project, marking a pivotal moment for West African energy security. The FLNG Gimi vessel, operating under a 20-year lease agreement offshore Mauritania and Senegal, will initially produce 2.4 million tons per annum of LNG before ramping up to full capacity of 2.7 MMtpa.

The project, backed by an estimated 15 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves, represents a game-changing development for regional energy markets. The facility is expected to significantly boost energy security while driving economic growth in both Mauritania and Senegal.

This milestone comes as Golar LNG continues expanding its African footprint, having signed a Project Development Agreement with Nigeria’s National Petroleum Company in June 2024 for a new facility in the Niger Delta. The company has been operating successfully in Cameroon since 2018 with its 2.4-million-ton-per-annum Hilli Episeyo FLNG facility.
