Namibia and South Africa Strengthen Green Hydrogen Partnership with Cross-Border Pipeline

Namibia is intensifying regional cooperation in the green hydrogen sector, working closely with South Africa to establish joint infrastructure and knowledge-sharing mechanisms supporting both countries’ industrial transitions.

Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme spokesperson Jona Musheko confirmed that both countries are planning a cross-border pipeline project to transport green hydrogen and ammonia from Lüderitz in southern Namibia to South Africa’s Northern Cape, specifically targeting cleaner mining and industrial activities in areas like Boegoeberg.

The cooperation builds on recent exchanges during South Africa’s Green Hydrogen Summit, where Namibian officials explored how the country’s green hydrogen output could help South Africa reduce industrial carbon emissions and maintain export access to strict markets like the European Union.

Beyond South Africa, Namibia is actively engaging other African countries, including Botswana, Ghana, and Kenya, to export knowledge and foster a continental green industrial ecosystem. Musheko emphasized that Namibia’s production capacity will soon exceed domestic demand, making regional integration crucial for maximizing the country’s green hydrogen potential.
